France Rejects Attempt To Legalize Pharma’s Medication Compliance Programs

March 1st, 2007 at 8:04 am · · Enhancements · No Comments

European Resistance To Drug Advertising Remains Inviolate

The resistance to the institution of Pharma-sponsored medication compliance programs noted in an earlier post, Pharma Compliance Programs Labeled “Advertising,” has been successful in keeping those programs outlawed in France.

According to a report by Ray Moynihan in the BMJ, Attempt to undermine European ban on advertising drugs fails in France, the proposal to permit patient compliance programs sponsored by drug manufacturers in France has failed.

Excerpts from the article follow:

Critics described the proposal as a backdoor attempt to introduce into France direct to consumer drug advertising, which is currently banned throughout Europe.
The drug industry defends public health programmes as valuable for boosting adherence to treatment; others argue the programmes are Big Brother-style marketing strategies intended to boost profits.

Commentary

As I argued in Pharma Compliance Programs Labeled “Advertising”

Now would be a good time to separate marketing and compliance
